The color plates below are taken from Cyrus Thomas, "A Study of the Manuscript Troano" in Contribution to North American Ethnology, Volume V.
In the late 19th century and early 20th century, the United States Government published this study and a wealth of other ethnographic material as part of its westward expansion efforts.
It is part of what is now referred to as the Madrid Codex (click here for more information). The plates below represent four sections of the Troano.
Scholars believe that the Madrid Codex was created in the late Mayan period.
