¿Porqué se Mueren las Abejas?

Desde hace años, las abejas se están muriendo en todo el mundo, silenciosa y discretamente.

En Europa, el índice de mortalidad es del 20 por ciento. En Alemania, este llega incluso al 30 por ciento. Los apicultores están dando la voz de alarma desde hace tiempo.

El enigma de la muerte de las abejas ocupa a muchos expertos de los institutos especializados del sector de las ciencias y de la agricultura.

• ¿Es un parásito, el ácaro Varroa, el causante de diezmar los enjambres de los apicultores?

• ¿O las monoculturas de la agricultura industrializada?

• ¿Qué papel cumplen aquí estas monoculturas modernas y el uso de pesticidas?

Sin las abejas, prácticamente un tercio de todo lo que comemos no existiría.

Expertos estiman que el valor financiero de la labor de polinización que realizan las abejas asciende, únicamente en Europa, a 23 000 millones de Euros. Sin embargo, afirman que el beneficio para los ecosistemas es, probablemente, incalculable.

What is Killing the Bees?

Bee populations all over the world have been slowly dying out for years.

In Europe, the death rate is around 20 percent, in Germany itself as much as 30. Beekeepers have long been trying to raise the alarm and scientists have been looking for a cause.

• Is it the Varroa mite, a pest, which is decimating beekeepers' swarms?

• Or is it the monocultures of industrial agriculture with its use of pesticides?

Without bees, around a third of what we eat wouldn't even exist.

Experts estimate that, in financial terms, the pollination of crops by bees is worth around 23 billion Euros in Europe alone. But their role in ecosystems in general is actually beyond price.
