Coleman Barks is the author of numerous Rumi translations and he has been a student of Sufism since 1977.  His work with Rumi was the subject of an hour-long segment in Bill Moyer’s Language of Life series on PBS (1995).

“I wait beside these poems with a kind of heart-listening…I’m not the cook, more a strangely elated waiter bringing out dishes.  I hope I am at times to be the empty screen on which Rumi’s joy and grief can play.  These poems are beyond me.  That’s why I love working on them.  They draw me where I have to go.”  --Coleman Barks

“Not since the popularity of The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran in the 1960s has a poet made such a dent in American culture. And if any one person could be said to be responsible for the Rumi renaissance it would have to be Coleman Barks.”  --The New York Times

Deva Premal & Miten - Deva Premal grew up in a spiritual family where she was introduced at an early age to chanting and meditation.  Her mother is a music teacher and her father an artist.  As a child she studied the violin and later in life found that it was her voice that was her instrument.  Miten, her partner in life and in music, established a successful career in the ’70s and ’80s as a singer songwriter touring with such bands as Fleetwood Mac, Ry Cooder, and Lou Reed.  He left that life to pursue a more spiritual path living in a commune and practicing meditation.  It was here he met Premal and found his music coming from a deeper source.  These two musicians have traveled the world for the past 10 years almost year round -- constantly singing in concert and in workshops.  This life has become their meditation, and their gift.

Joan Phillips Ocean, M.S.W. shares the ancient wisdom uncovered during her research work with dolphins and whales. She experiences their gentle communications as sound holography, a "language" that intensifies physical senses, bypasses rational-cognitive paradigms, resonates directly with our cellular intelligence, and awakens multiple levels of perception and consciousness.

Ocean has devoted her life to "participatory research"—swimming among the dolphins and whales, watching and learning from them as they transcend linear sensory reality and expand into the larger Universe where the unknown civilizations welcome us.  She explains that a merging of different dimensions, of differing planes of existence, is occurring now and that when we choose to prepare ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually to cross thresholds of consciousness, our belief systems will expand to accommodate these beautiful, unknown, yet faintly familiar realms.

John Mack, M.D., tells The Prophets Conference “a story of one man’s determination to bear witness to cosmic mysteries with extraordinary implications for the human future…”
An esteemed professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and a Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer, Dr. John Mack has worked closely with hundreds of individuals from around the world who have reported life-changing experiences with so-called "alien" beings. Dr. Mack reports,

"The people who have these experiences move. They change. They grow. They transform. They become Earth-conscious. That is why I seek to give them voice, for they become passionate on behalf of the stewardship of the Earth."

The profound, surprising and at times deeply spiritual impact these experiences have had on their lives led Dr. Mack to realize that the Western world needs a way to address intelligences and realities that are not clearly in the objective or the subjective realms but seem to partake of both. In his books Abduction and Passport to the Cosmos, Dr. Mack suggests alien encounters and other phenomena such as near-death experiences and ’past-life’ recollections are vehicles for recovering perennial wisdom. He places emphasis on spiritual transformation as the nexus of the alien encounter experience, even likening it to a shamanic expansion of consciousness.  Dr. Mack won the 1977 Pulitzer Prize for A Prince of Our Disorder.

Judith Orloff, M.D. is accomplishing for psychiatry what physicians like Larry Dossey and Dean Ornish have done for mainstream medicine - she is proving that the links between physical health, mental well-being, and spiritual connectedness cannot be ignored. Transforming the face of psychiatry, Dr. Orloff, asserts that we are keepers of an innate intuitive intelligence so perceptive that it can tell us how to heal - and prevent - illness. Yet intuition and spirituality are the very aspects of our wisdom usually disenfranchised from traditional health care.

Krishna Das met Ram Dass in the winter of 1968, who had just returned from his first trip to India. After living and traveling with Ram Dass in the U.S., and hearing Ram Dass’ many stories about Maharaj-ji, Krishna Das traveled to India, where he was blessed to meet and stay with this extraordinary guru. While living in India for almost three years, Krishna Das’ heart was especially drawn to the practice of Bhakti Yoga—the yoga of devotion. Fanning the flames of his inner longing, Maharaj-ji led him deeper and deeper into the practice of kirtan—chanting the Names of God.

As an appointed pujari (priest) for the Durga temple in Maharaj-ji’s ashram in the foothills of the Himalayas, Krishna Das immersed himself in the worship of the Divine Goddess. Over the years Krishna Das has made numerous pilgrimages throughout India, meeting teachers and saints of many spiritual traditions. He has studied Buddhist meditation practices and has been initiated into Tibetan Buddhist practices by lamas from various lineages. Krishna Das leads chanting and satsang.  Sharing his heart through music and chanting is the basis of Krishna Das’ own spiritual work.

Ram Dass has led the life of seeker and traveler, teacher and social activist for 45 years. The quality of his conscious-ness is legendary, not only for the words spoken, but because of the spell that is somehow invoked in his company. Ram Dass is well known for his experimentation with LSD and his anthem book of the late ’60s “Be Here Now”. But his life works include much more than these. Early on he created the Prison Ashram Project, introducing deep spiritual work in prison.

To the taboo surrounding death & dying in this culture, he responded with the Dying Project, introducing dying people to other planes of consciousness. Noticing the need to combine social action with spiritual motive, Ram Dass co-created the Seva Foundation, working with doctors and activists in India, Nepal, Guatemala and here in the US. He has worked with business people in the Social Venture Net-work, and with Creating Our Future, a spiritually questing organization for teenagers, among many other causes. The common theme in all of these projects has been the application of spiritual principles to social realities.

Russell Targ and Dr. Harold Puthoff were co-founders of the once-secret Stanford Research Institute Remote Viewing Program, which began in 1972.  Their research goal was to learn to understand psychic abilities, and to use psychic perception to gather information about the Soviet Union during the Cold War.  In 1984 Targ facilitated a successful 10,000-mile, Moscow to San Francisco remote viewing with famed Russian healer Djuna Davidashvili.  Targ observed that the in-flow of information that is the hallmark of remote viewing, and the out-flow of intention that plays a part in facilitating distant healing are on either side of the quiet mind and the stillness that can arise between these two.
