To complement its work on the Charter Project,
the Foundation has sought to raise awareness of Afghan Democratic
initiative. To that end, the Foundation publicized and participated
as observers in the third meeting in Bonn, Germany on July 18-22,
1998 of the Intra-Afghan Dialouge Process, one of the only
broad-based democratic initiatives sponsored by the Afghan Diaspora
as well as Afghans inside Afghanistan under the auspices of the
Council for Peace and Unity of Afghanistan (CPNUA).
On August 18, 1998, the Foundation convened a panel of
high-ranking members of CPNUA in the Mansfield room of the U.S.
Capitol, attended by approximately 100 policy analysts, media
representatives and academics.
The Foundation played an important role in facilitating
support and interest of Congress, State Department and other key
agencies in the Dialouge Process and continues to work with the
leadership, help expand it, and to follow its progress. The
Foundation hopes to inject Charter principles into the process and
to seek input on the Charter from participants. as well as from
other Afghans and organizations seeking a resolution to the
conflict. |
