The Foundation has established a senior Task
Force to provide analysis and recommendations for U.S. policymakers,
based on the developing White Paper. The Task Force consists of four
primary components: two co-chairs representing the Republican and
Democratic parties, members of Congress and policy experts.
The congressional Task Force members are Senators
Orrin Hatch
(R-UT) and Robert Kerrey (D-NE); Representatives
Tom Davis
(R-VA), James
Moran (D-VA),
John Porter (R-IL),
Dana
Rohrabacher (R-CA),
Duncan Hunter (R-CA) and
Edward Royce
(R-CA). The task force has met periodically to discuss the impact of
developments in Afghanistan on the White Paper.
In May 1998, the Foundation sent a
research mission to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Russia to
inform the White Paper process. The delegation met with key leaders
of the Taliban, other Afghan factions and key players in the region.
The Foundation also has sponsored forums on Capitol Hill to provide
insight for the White Paper.
The paper has been completed and awaits distribution to
the media and general public on July 12, 1999. We have briefed key
congressional staff and plan to circulate copies as we work to
elevate U.S. policy to a new level of leadership, as proposed by the
paper.
